Chicken Haulers and High Liners

I thought this chapter was interesting and entertaining because i knew truckers had their own language but i never heard it until this class. I never knew that truck drivers took this job so seriously as to distinguish themselves by names, to seperate one from the other as to where they travel. However the most entertaining part i found about this chapter were when they explained what each term meant like hammer down, rocking chair, or chicken fried everything. Even when they talk to each other on the radio's they have a certain speech they use to communicate with eachother. Overall i found this chapter interesting because it seems like this is just another subgroup.

Lesbian History And politics Identities

Overall i felt as though this whole chapter was interesting. I found it interesting to know that their are all different types of names that lesbians use to identitfy themselves because each lesbian is not the same type. I also found it interesting to know that early sexologiststs believed that homosexuality was an illnes. I never took the time out to really think about the whole history and background about lesbians. They have background and history just like any other race, or culture, which is really interesting. I never knew the etomology behind lesbians ot furthermore where the word came from until i read this chapter. Another thing i found interesting about this chapter was that i didnt know certain terms like dyke, was looked at as a negative term to some lesbians because i have hear this term being used a lot toward lesbians that are kinda like tom boys. I feel like this chapter opened its readers eyes to another perspective and gave us all something consider and be more weary of as far as what we say and what can actually be offensive.

Homophobia

In my opinion i feel as though this topic is sad. I feel like having homophobia is ignorant because i dont understand how people can be scared of lebians and gay men, we are all people at the end of the day. Just because they are attracted to someone of the same sex doesnt mean they should be treated like its wrong. In my opinion i feel the people that have homophobia are afraid of being approached or hit on but someone of the same sex, or has had a bad experience being approached by one. I know of a few guys who are like this and they say that they dont like gay guys because they feel that what they are doing is nasty, when they could just be walking down the street. I also feel like people with homphobia are quick to judge before they really get to the a gay or a lesbian person as an individual, when it shouldnt have to be like that.

Media and Marketing

I found it very interesting that a lot of print media relates to the gay community. I never knew that certain symbols were apart of the gay movement. However i would like to say that i like how The media does support gays and lesbians by having shows such as Queer Eye for The Straight Guy, the L word, and one of my favorite shows that isnt listed in Ru Paul's Drag Race! I feel like all of these shows remind us how we are all equal at the end of the day even though we all love differently, they too can can a reality like every one else. I personally love how they reinforce the gay and lesbian culture and embrace it. As they should!

Argot & Subgroups

I can relate this topic because in every organiztion, sorority, frat. job, or sport there is a certain language in which one speaks. For example in dance there are certain terms that only we as dancers understood. For example if we were at a rehearsal and someone says "from the top" the means start the dance from the begininng. If the instructor says "Full out" thats the instructor telling you to perform the dance to your best ability. If we say "run through" that means just going through the routine step my step with no music. There are many other different terms we use in dance but those were are some of the basics. At first the terms might be confusing but after you've been dancing a while will learn the hang of it. In general i can be a little frustrating when your dont understand what someone is talking about because you're not apart of their subgroup, but i think thats what makes each org., sport, activity etc. interesting.

Masculinity Versus Femininity: p.175-177

After reading this section I would have to say that I was really amazed at how many different cultures put a lot of high values on masculinity. I understand that in some cultures there are some expected labels of what men are expected to and what women are expected to do, and in my opinion I think that’s sad. In some countries like Afghanistan women are looked at as inferior to men and are forced to obey certain rules in order for the roles to stay that way. In America I would have to say that more of the Masculinity Versus Femininity is based on sports and gender roles. Like some people don’t watch women’s basketball because it’s considered as a man’s sport. For example do you ever hear anyone talk about when the next big WNBA game is? I know I haven’t but one is for sure you see the next Lakers game advertised everywhere! In addition to sports gender roles has a huge part in Masculinity versus femininity. In many families cooking and cleaning is considered to be a females role, where as the masculine role is fixing things around the house. In my family there are some husbands who will not let their wife mow the lawn because they feel as thought it’s their job to do so. In opinion I don’t really believe in Masculine and feminine roles too much. I believe that there are certain jobs men should do because it can be dangerous but I feel like other things like cooking, cleaning, yard work, changing the oil, being the handyman around the house and even playing sports are all equal in my eyes because the women in my women do all of these things. So in my world Masculine versus Femininity is just away to try to put women in their place to fit the male criteria of what a woman should be but doesn’t necessarily have to make it reality.

This photo below is a great example of feminine versus masculinity because she has on the veil which portrays the women’s role but she flexing her are muscle, which is looked at as being very masculine.

Uncertainty Avoidance: pg. 179-180

After reading this section I found it interesting that there are certain cultures that do certain things to prevent the feeling of uncertainty or unknown situations. Based my life I would have to say that I have low uncertainty avoidance because I live life expecting the unexpected. Although I will say that I know a lot of people who have a high uncertainty avoidance in other words they get mad if someone doesn’t have an answer to their question like a professor, or go crazy if they don’t plan their day out according from the time they wake up to the time they go to sleep. People with high uncertainty avoidance live their lives seeking a sense of security knowing what’s going to happen rather than relaxing and excepting life as it comes despite the outcome. In my opinion I feel as though people should live a little bit of both. In some cases I feel as though having low uncertainty avoidance is needed and in a lot cases I feel as though high uncertainty avoidance is needed as well especially if you are in the business field. However in my opinion outside of business and school, people should live their lives in a low uncertainty avoidance it because it would give people an equal balance on life rather than being stressed out all the time or being too relaxed.

I chose this picture because it shows a visual example of how people look at uncertainty avoidance, high or low. Either you’re trying to avoid those routed or you’re going to accept the unknown.
